In today's world, it has long since been an everyday affair for people
to want to take along a cello to New York, a surfboard to Spain, or a
mountain bike to North Africa. Nor is it any problem, because you can
also check in bulky items at your airline's counter - just as if they were
normal suitcases. But to play it safe, it's advisable to ask about any special
requirements or restrictions when booking your flight.
These baggage items also undergo security inspection, either at separate X-ray machines in the check-in hall or in the baggage basement.
The best way to protect bulky items: transport cases.
The Airport Baggage Service is glad to assist. It usually has cases for
transporting animals and bicycles on hand, which you can pick up one or
two hours before your departure. You'll find the Airport Baggage Service
(FGS) in Terminal 1, Hall B (Arrivals) and in Terminal 2, Hall E (Arrivals). It's
best to call in advance, however: by dialing +49 (0) 69/690-51211.
Tips for picking up bulky items.
At other airports there are often separate counters or areas for picking up
bulky items. So it's best to inquire before leaving where you can get them
after arriving.
