Dangerous Goods

Even everyday products can pose risks.

Some of the things we take to be harmless can potentially turn into
hazardous on board an aircraft. That is why certain products and
items that might endanger the lives or health of others may not be
transported either in the cargo hold or the passenger cabin. To provide
you with a guide, we have compiled a list of hazardous goods that may not
be taken along under any circumstances:

  • Explosives, such as ammunition and fireworks
  • Propane gas canisters and other compressed, liquefied, pressurized and
    cryogenic gases
  • Radioactive and oxidating substances and peroxides ( e.g., bleaches)
  • Flammable solids and liquids, self-igniting and water-reactive substances
    (e.g., paints, coatings and thinners)
  • Caustic solids and liquids (e.g., wet-cell batteries, mercury — also as part of
    equipment and instruments)
  • Poisons such as insect sprays, infectious materials and environmentally
    harmful substances
  • Lighters containing unabsorbed liquid fuel (exception: lighters with liquefied gas),
    lighter fluid and refill cartridges

The following items are allowed only if certain precautions are taken:

  • Some battery-powered devices, especially diving and video lamps, may only be
taken in carry-on luggage if the light source is removed and if the airline gives
    its express permission.
  • You may only carry gas lighters and matches on your body.
